I was lucky enough to catch the “one-night only” screening of “Sound City“, the rock and roll history documentary by Foo Fighters frontman, Dave Grohl.

The documentary is about Sound City Studios, the legendary artists that recorded there, the successful influential music that was born there, the rise of digital media, the death of analogue, and what music means to the human spirit.

Not only is the film about a legendary studio, but there are also background stories about Fleetwood Mac, Stevie Nicks, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Rick Springfield, and of course Nirvana, and the Foo Fighters – all who which recorded at Sound City Studios.

I was surprisingly impressed with the film as I’m not a big Foo Fighters fan and although it was Dave Grohl‘s directorial debut, I believe he did a great job.

In the film Dave Grohl and his friends also collaborate with some of these legendary artists in tribute. My favourite of these was when Dave Grohl create an original song with his music hero, Paul McCartney. There’s been talk that there will be a tour relating to the film as well and Sydney will be a likely stop. No dates have been released yet.

If you didn’t catch the film, don’t worry! You can pay to instant stream the film from iTunes or you could wait for the film to come out on DVD or Blu-Ray. If you were interested in the music from the film, a soundtrack will be released on the same day.

Even if you don’t usually watch documentaries, I highly recommend watching Sound City, especially if you love your music. I don’t usually watch documentaries often, but I really did enjoy this film.

At the end of the day, if not for the music history or the story of the studio, at least watch the film for the story about Dave Grohl getting a legendary Neve board. It’s great.
