“The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones” Film Review.

The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones” is based on a novel of the same name by author Cassandra Clare.

This film tells the story of Clary played by Lily Collins who whilst innocently hanging out with her best friend, Simon played by Robert Sheehan, discovers the “Shadowhunter” world. When a loved one is taken from her, Clary‘s life is soon changed. With the help of Jamie Campbell Bower‘s character Jace, Jemima West‘s character Isabelle, Kevin Zegers‘s character, Alec, and some assistance from Magnus Bane played by Godfrey Gao, together they must rescue Clary‘s mother and find the Mortal Cup.

Having previously read the book before seeing the film, I was apprehensive about some of the changes in the story. Nevertheless despite the changes, the film was still quite exciting and entertaining. I understand that movies cannot be completely the same as their novel counterparts, but I do believe that the people behind the creation of the film counterparts to successful book series should try harder. I was accompanied to the viewing of this film with someone who had never read the book and still enjoyed the movie.

If you have been curious about this film, I would definitely recommend a viewing – just don’t expect a sequel. Unfortunately I don’t believe it did well in the box office to warrant a sequel. There have been talks there would be one, but there is no guarantee and I wouldn’t play the waiting game if you want to know what happens next. The books are actually quite brilliant and I strongly urge you to pick one up if you want to know more and if the second film doesn’t happen.

I found satisfaction in Lily Collins‘s portrayal of Clary. She suited what I imagined Clary would be like. But the one that surprised me the most was Jamie Campbell Bower‘s portral of Jace. I was never actually fond of him as an actor, but he really changed my mind in The Mortal Instruments. “Impressed” is an understatement.

Overall, “The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones” is a nice little film that will satisfy viewers, but had it been truer to the book, it would have done better. It could have been amazing.
