Following the growing momentum of their previous single ‘IKYLT’, which earned support from Triple J Unearthed, SYN Media, Local Sounds Radio and editorial coverage across Happy Mag, Sounds of Oz and Lilithia Reviews, Blake Appelqvist returns with PAY YOUR DUES – their clearest artistic statement to date.
Grounded in contemporary R&B with an undeniable pop sensibility, this track transforms a familiar phrase into a meditation on ambition, attraction and the invisible cost of pursuing a future that was never designed to include everyone. Beginning with intimate, conversational storytelling before erupting into an expansive final chorus, PAY YOUR DUES blends the tension of the futures we’re expected to inherit and the lives we’re trying to build for ourselves.
“PAY YOUR DUES came from an encounter I had with someone who had their life planned out, but still wanted me – despite having mapped out the rest of his life. As queer people, we’re often building our own blueprint, because society has not built one for us. Attraction gets tricky when you’re falling for someone who’s following a future that doesn’t always leave room for you, or their complexity. This song sits in that contradiction.”
For some people, paying your dues means working harder. For others, it means waiting longer. For many young queer people, it can mean learning to love outside the timeline the world expected you to follow. PAY YOUR DUES is the third release from Blake’s debut EP campaign, with the full project arriving in November 2026.
With each release, Blake Appelqvist continues to sharpen a sound that refuses easy categorisation melding contemporary R&B, pop and atmospheric production with songwriting that interrogates identity, intimacy and expectation. As anticipation builds toward their debut EP this November, PAY YOUR DUES feels less like another single and more like a defining statement of intent.
Perhaps the hardest part of paying your dues isn’t the cost, but rather realising you never agreed to the bill.
