The corner of High Street was teeming with fans of all ages as Canadian rapper Connor Price descended on Melbourne’s Northcote Theatre on Friday night for the first stop in the Australian leg of his Spin the Globe Tour.
Starting his career as an actor at 6 years old, Connor Price appeared in films like Cinderella Man alongside Russell Crowe and the 2013 remake of Stephen King’s Carrie. Price began his transition into music in the 2010s but it wasn’t until 2022 when his star started to go meteoric. The COVID pandemic brought Price’s acting career to a halt, so he began posting skits on TikTok, showcasing his quick bulletproof rap abilities on tracks like Drake’s ‘Over the Top’ and ‘Off Deez’ by JID. The popularity of the format prompted Price to start promoting his own music this way, and then he struck true gold with the Spin the Globe series.
For those not in the know, the Spin the Globe series featured Connor Price spinning a literal globe and picking an artist to collaborate with from whatever country his finger landed on. The first video, where he featured Zambian rapper Killa, has been viewed over 70 million times and prompted Price to do it again and again. The first Spin the Globe series resulted in an EP of the same name, and a year later Spin the Globe 2 followed with fresh features from new countries as well as some returning favourites. This was how I first discovered Price and was immediately captivated. I’ve followed his career closely ever since, and when the Australian tour dates were announced, I dove into the inbox of our Editor in Chief to demand I get to cover the show.
So, there we were on the balcony of the Northcote Theatre, overlooking the packed-out ground floor. Price, who sets himself apart from his peers with totally clean lyrics, has a very broad fan base with much of the crowd made up of whole families; parents with kids of all ages, some sitting on their dad’s shoulders, others propped up on the bar, wearing tour merch and ready to vibe out to what may have been their first ever concert. And what a concert it was.
Opening the show was Connor Price’s main producer and rapper GRAHAM. Hardcore fans of Price know all about GRAHAM – his producer tag “100graham” is all over Price’s discography. Musically, he’s not too dissimilar from Price and brought a bouncy, energetic energy to his half-hour set. Despite making the faux pas of calling us Brisbane, GRAHAM showed off his smooth vocals and deft rapping skills, moving the crowd to clap along to his song ‘Medicine’ and wave their arms in time to the beats. GRAHAM finished his set strong but wasn’t gone for long, standing sentry at the laptop for the rest of the night.
When it came time for Connor Price to take the stage, flashing lights and a countdown timer announced his arrival. Price burst onto the stage to ‘Million Cash’, a hard-hitting braggadocio track that features American rapper Armani White. Continuing with a train of rap bangers, Price transitioned into ‘Straight A’s’ and ‘Cubicle’, songs that had the whole venue jumping. Taking a short break to play a little trivia with the crowd, Price transitioned into one of my favourites songs ‘Not a Beanie’, the tongue-in-cheek bop done with fellow Canadian rapper bbno$, and as Price performed the song, he threw beanies (or not beanies) into the Melbourne audience and took phones from fans to record.
Despite being a very prolific artist with a swathe of singles and collab EPs under his belt, Price hadn’t released his first full length album until September this year. The album, aptly named About Time, explores his development as an artist and parent, featuring verses from Spin the Globe alums, as well as industry heavy hitters like Big Sean and Idris Elba.
Friday’s show in Melbourne marked the first time Connor Price had performed songs from the album live, including the track ‘Despicable’, a boastful banger offset only by the clips of Price and his son Jude playing on the big screen. As Price ran through a selection of tracks from the album like ‘Push’ and ‘Dialed In’, he kindly singled out some dedicated fans in the Melbourne crowd that he saw rapping all the words, gifting them signed vinyl copies of About Time in gratitude.
One thing that has always stood out to me about Connor Price is the way he refuses to achieve success on his own. This is so apparent through his TikTok series, where he seeks out burgeoning artists to work with, rather than big names who could boost his own status. One such up-and-comer was Benjo, also known as l!fe, a Filipino-Australian hip-hop artist who caught Price’s attention on socials. Bringing Benjo on stage, the pair performed ‘Buddy’ together, a song originally done by Price and frequent collaborator Hoodie Allen. Benjo and Price were electric together with a natural chemistry. When the song ended, the entire Melbourne audience were supportively chanting Benjo’s name.
This moment was the epitome of the community that Connor Price’s music has cleverly built; supportive, uplifting, and inclusive, and this level of care extends far beyond his musical collaborators. When Price noticed a fan in need of help he immediately cut the music and did not start again until he knew that they had been taken care of, and it’s little things like this, the things that go further than the music, that make me such a big fan.
If there’s one thing Connor Price was born to do, it’s perform. As his acting career maintains a steady momentum and his music career continues to power up, it’s unquestionable to think that Connor Price’s future could be anything but blindingly bright. Price’s Spin the Globe Tour concert in Melbourne was just the beginning for the Canadian artist. Next stop, bigger crowds and bigger venues.
