Georgie Potter is here to entertain you with her show, ‘Fangirl Fundamentals’. Taking up residency at The Motley Bauhaus’ Cabaret Stage for a two-week festival run, in an entertaining and educational performance, Georgie tells of the phenomenon of the fangirl, and particularly, the power of her.
Being a fangirl isn’t something that happens overnight. For Georgie, it’s been a 20-year-to-date journey towards her evolution, and counting. From writing fan letters, making signs, thriving on social media, battling the ticketing outlets, to lining up all day to get barrier, if you’re an avid concert goer and lover of live music like Georgie is, then you’d know all about the time, effort and dedication spent into being a fan. If you aren’t, Georgie has organised and presented instructions in five easy steps on how to be a fangirl, and you don’t even need to be a girl to do it!
It’s hard to believe that Fangirl Fundamentals is Georgie Potter’s Melbourne International Comedy Festival debut. Naturally funny with boundless energy and confidence, equipped with mad vocal chops, great hair and an infectious smile, this bubbly and fiercely zealous woman is as much of an artist as the ones she shares stories about. With only a microphone on a microphone stand, music and a projector screen, Georgie Potter is fearless, diving headfirst into shamelessly sharing just how damn proud she is of the things that she deeply loves.
From ‘Strawberry Kisses’ to Short Stack, Oasis to Robbie Williams, throughout the almost hour-long show of Fangirl Fundamentals, not only do we listen to Georgie’s advice, but we have a lot of fun doing it, all the while not only learning more about fangirl culture as whole, but about Georgie herself. The two are mutually exclusive.
Georgie has mastered Oasis member Liam Gallagher’s posture and mannerisms to a tea, and she has the same firecracker spunk as her hero Robbie Williams, who would undoubtedly be proud of her. Georgie commands her audience like a seasoned pop star, encouraging everyone to sing along, clap, and I’m surprised that she has yet to ask patrons to bring out their phone lights to wave around during the slower numbers. It’s not all laughs though. Georgie, like many of us, lean on music to get her through the darker days, and at a certain point, the show made me really pay attention Robbie Williams’ lyrics, helping me see his songs in a new light.
The show is well written and presented, for the most part. However, I felt the Powerpoint slides flicked through a little too quickly to the next slide or off to a blank screen. So even though I could clearly see that there was writing, what was shown didn’t stay on screen long enough for me to read them. Blink, and you’d miss it entirely.
Georgie Potter is here to show you that while being a fangirl has been seen in the past in a negative light, her vivid and unique experiences still bring joy to this date (an excellent investment if you asked me). And if they make her happy, then why the hell should it ever be seen as bad? I daresay, although it is typical for fans to support their favourite music artists, one must remember that these celebrated careers would not exist without the undying essential support and love of fangirls, just like Georgie.
Considering this show marks her festival debut, I cannot wait to see what else Georgie comes up with in the near future. I believe we have only scratched the surface with her ideas, tales and talent. You don’t have to be a fangirl to love Fangirl Fundamentals (but it helps), you just have to have a heart, an appreciation for the power of music, and enjoy good storytelling. And Georgie has a damn good story up her sleeves, one that you may even be envious of.
