Earth’s mightiest heroes make a return, but this time it is not to the big screen. From the studio that brought you the recent Tomb Raider series, Crystal Dynamics, and published by gaming powerhouse, Square Enix, Marvel’s Avengers is coming to your favourite gaming platform in 2020. After seeing the teaser and gameplay footage at this year’s E3 expo, I was excited to see Marvel’s Avengers at PAXaus 2019 with a playable demo at the PlayStation booth.
Those that know me, know that I am a massive Marvel fan and will see or play anything remotely related to the franchise. Although this new game will have no correlation to the film franchise, I am just as excited to get my hands on it.
The story begins in San Francisco as the team are attending the opening of their new Head Quarters on A-Day (Avengers Day). As part of the proceedings, the Avengers also unveil their brand new Helicarrier powered by Terrigen Crystal. The festivities are cut short when the city comes under attack and the Avengers swing into action.
The demo is short but gives you the chance to play as almost all of the Avengers. Kicking off as Thor you are shown how to control the character and how to use the special moves. As you progress through the demo, you switch over to a different characters; Iron Man, Hulk, Captain America and Black Widow.
Overall it was a lot of fun, and I think I enjoyed being Captain America the most during this demo. But with the gameplay being made available from a pre-alpha game build, it is clear that a lot of work is needed to make this game the best it can be. I absolutely adored the recent Tomb Raider series from Crystal Dynamics, so I have high expectations for this game. Hopefully, I will not be disappointed.
Marvel’s Avengers hits the shelves in May 2020 and will be available on Google Stadia, Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
