Sony Interactive Entertainment and Insomniac Games have teamed up to release one of the most anticipated games of 2018, Marvel’s Spider-Man for PS4. Set in New York City, we follow Peter Parker as he struggles to balance his personal life with his responsibilities of keeping the locals safe from the criminal underworld.
I was a massive fan of the original Spider-Man: The Movie video game from 2002. So when I saw the trailer for this one during E3, it really piqued my interest. After finally getting my hands on the new game last week, I dived right in and was instantly in awe.
The game starts out with Peter Parker suiting up as Spider-Man ready to fight some crime. You swing into action right away. Traversing through the city as you learn the basic mechanics of web-slinging. The controls are relatively simple and easy to get used to. It’s not long before you’re required to engage in your first fight sequence. Here you are shown the basic mechanics of fighting as well as how to use your Spidey-Sense.
After the quick tutorials, you’re on your way to the first mission to take down Wilson Fisk. Here we are introduced to Yuri Watanabe, a NYC Detective that has been working with Spidey for some time. We also get our first glimpse of the amazing voice acting, with an excited Spidey ready to swing into the fight. I’m not going to lie, I felt that I was just button mashing for the first few plays. But after getting used to the moves and gameplay mechanics, it is so much fun fighting the bad guys.
Aside from the main story line, there are numerous side missions and collectibles hidden around New York City. Swinging through the city is so much fun, especially as you learn new web-slinging moves and tricks. As the type of gamer that loves collecting items, this part of the game is so much fun. There are several collectibles and unlockable items that pay homage to the Spider-Man universe, including all the different suits available and items found in the backpacks scattered across the city.
Although I have not completed a lot of the main storyline, it is certainly very interesting and exciting. Meeting several characters along the way. You even get to play as other characters as part of the main mission. I am about 50% completed, however that is mostly side missions and collectibles. I have so much more to play, and I cannot wait.
Overall the game is a lot of fun and visually stunning. The level of detail on the city is incredible and doesn’t feel like you’re seeing the same copy/paste buildings as you swing around. For me the voice acting is what makes it one of the best games I’ve played since Horizon Zero Dawn. I find myself laughing and enjoying the game every session. I cannot recommend this game enough! Spider-Man is out now, exclusively on PS4.
