Mom, Is That You?! (こんにちは、母さん) {Japanese Film Festival} – Film Review

No matter how old we become, we will always be our mother’s child and this love transcends.

Mom, Is That You?! (こんにちは、母さん) follows salaryman Akio Kanzaki (Yo Oizumi) as he navigates his life as a HR manager and at home; from his demanding job to the complexities of his relationship with his sassy daughter Mai (Mei Nagano), and the strain of his marriage. Akio is going through what could only be summarised as a mid-life crisis.

Feeling the burn of his workplace and the looming pressures of laying off his long-time friend Kibe (Kankuro Kudo), Akio decides to visit his mother, Fukue (Sayuri Yoshinaga). For the first time in a long time since leaving home for college, he is perplexed by the changes in his mother. Expecting to find the same mother he left behind, he is surprised to see Fukue transformed into a stylish, vibrant woman actively pursuing hobbies – and to his shock, she’s even in love.

It’s even more puzzling for him when he realises how strained his relationship with his daughter really is when her source of comfort is his mother, her grandmother, putting emphasis on that nurturing warmth and unconditional love that mothers provide, free from judgement. As Akio reflects on his own shortcomings as a parent, colleague and son, he begins to appreciate the unique bonds around him. And it is through these bonds that he comes to the realisation of his own role within his family, friends and career.

While Mei seeks to be heard for who she wants to be, what she wants to do and not being burdened by the pressures her mother’s expectations for her to either succeed like her father or marrying someone like him, Mei yearns to live her life to the fullest, on her own terms. The demands that prompt her to run away from her own mother and into the arms of Fukue, her grandmother. For Mei to find solace in her grandmother, made Akio realise that not only must he confront his own expectations but also understand and support his daughter in her desires and choices.

And as Fukue is growing old and alone, it is no wonder that she has picked up new interests and engaging in activities that brings her joy. From helping those in need alongside her Poppy Club members, to going on late-night dates with her love interest, Paster Ogyu (Akira Terao), she showcases a vibrant and fulfilling life.

I found it very heartwarming how Fukue, despite being widowed and having Akio move out to start his own life, reignite a part of herself to seek new companionship. This journey of self-discovery and renewal highlights some of the resilience we could have as individuals and the idea that even in later stages of life, we can still forge meaningful connections, find new hobbies and rediscover love.

I also thoroughly enjoyed Momoe Banba (Moe Edamoto) light-hearted interactions with the other characters, adding a touch of laughter to the audience with her subtle comedic scenes. Her bustling warmth no matter how small of a scene added that light-hearted filter we needed to remind us that life is short, and to stop stressing over everything.

In a sense, the film Mom, Is That You?! resonates with audiences from all walks of life. It reminds us that regardless of where we are on our own journeys that it’s okay to slow down, to fail and start anew. Mom, Is That You!? emphasises that we can face challenges and difficulties head-on while embracing the endless possibilities that life offers.

This relatable narrative encourages viewers to reflect on their own experiences, highlighting the importance of resilience, understanding, and family connections. Serving as a reminder that a mother’s love is enduring, just as the love for their children remains unwavering, inspiring audiences to appreciate these connections and the strength that our parents provide as we too navigate change.

Commemorating his 90th film, director Yoji Yamada’s Mom, Is That You?! (こんにちは、母さん) explores the complexities of familial love and emphasises on the importance of understanding and acceptance in the face of loss. The film carefully captures the bittersweet nature of growth and the enduring impact of a mother’s love beautifully.
