A jack of all trades. After experiencing Silence Wang (汪苏泷) firsthand, it was impossible not to fall in love with him and the magic he brewed.
He has proven through numerous hit tracks since his debut in 2010, through his 11 full length albums and with his frequent contributions to television series original soundtracks, that this Chinese singer-songwriter is one of Mandopop’s most influential artists in the last decade.
Silence Wang celebrated his first ever visit to Australia with the 2026 “Rise of Romance” World Tour, performing two exclusive shows at Melbourne’s Rod Laver Arena. Rising to the stage accompanied by his little monsters characters for ‘Sugar Bomb (地动山摇)’, this entertaining entrance had the Melbourne crowd erupting in cheers. Closing the gap and moving onto the extension stage, Silence approached during ‘The Greatest Showman (大娱乐家)’ and ‘The Entertainment Generation (娱乐世代)’.
The artist explained that Melbourne was the third stop of his world tour and that he had just been in Seattle. Travelling across the world, he was battling the time difference between the two countries. Silence excitedly announced that this was his first-ever show down under, which coincided with his 101st concert performance, and he got the party started with ‘A Bird (飞鸟)’.
The Melbourne audience’s singalong to ‘Let the Rain Come Down (就让这大雨全都落下)’ was extremely heartwarming and full of emotion. I loved that Silence Wang looked directly at his fans while performing his love songs, creating a particularly intimate bond throughout ‘The First Love Song (第一首情歌)’, also sitting at the end of the extended stage for ‘Sunny (晴)’. This really showed just how much his music meant to his fans, as ‘Suddenly This Summer (忽而今夏)’ echoed through the arena with fans singing in unison. He also created playful fan interactions by playing with the lyrics of ‘Geng (耿)’.
Rolling out a beautifully crafted piano that resembled a music box, ‘Eccentric (古怪)’ was breathtaking. Silence Wang spoke about fondly strolling through the streets of Melbourne while still getting a taste of home, with the city filled with Chinese food and milk tea, unlike during his US tour, where he had admittedly eaten bread and steak every day.
As if transported to a jazz club, ‘Jasmine (茉莉)’ and ‘Her Story (小段)’ brought out the slow tempos and soothing melodies, as Silence continued to serenade Australian fans with ‘Just Thinking (不过是想)’ and ‘You Are in the World I Like (你在我喜欢的世界里)’. Playing with the centralised lightsticks, he created magic by controlling the lights across the arena before seamlessly moving into ‘Like Sunshine Like Rain (像晴天像雨天)’, the crowd favourite tune turning into a massive karaoke session as Melbourne fans passionately joined in and happily sung along.
The next segment was a visual treat, showcasing Silence Wang’s darker hip-hop style and creating an apocalyptic world engulfed in smoke and fire for ‘The Fire Rises (黎明降临之前)’ and ‘Never Give Up (不服)’. I must confess, I had mainly known Silence Wang through his love songs, so when I heard ‘Sisyphus (旷梦)’ and ‘Bach’s Old Testament (巴赫旧约)’, I was thoroughly impressed by his wide range of music genres and rapping ability.
I’ve always loved when music incorporates traditional Chinese elements. In Silence’s discography, this was present with songs, ‘Sword Soul (剑魂)’, ‘Legend of the Three Kingdoms (三国杀)’, and ‘Rings of Time (年轮)’, which beautifully demonstrated just how these influences could produce vastly different yet equally impactful music.
As if on cue, fans seated on the floor hurriedly swarmed to the barricades to catch a closer glimpse of Silence, dressed in pink, as he threw a bunch of flowers to the crowd during ‘A Love With No Break Up (不分手的恋爱)’. His little monsters became the best backup dancers for ‘One Alluring Smile (一笑倾城)’, and the reason patrons eagerly headed toward the stage soon became clear, as the Mandopop singer jumped offstage to get up close and personal with lucky fans during ‘A Little Sweet (有点甜)’ and ‘Little Stars (小星星)’, where Silence shook hands, had fans sing along with him, and took selfies.
One of my favourite songs of his, ‘Never Meet Again (后会无期)’, kicked off the final encore segment as Silence was pushed around in a small pink cart by his little monsters. His charismatic performance of ‘Feng Du (风度)’ further deepened my appreciation for the track. Silence Wang expressed that despite the long journey from the Northern Hemisphere to the Southern Hemisphere and the significant time difference, he was grateful to have made it here.
Silence shared that the music had brought everyone together, to blissfully create these precious memories, and with a selfie stick in hand, he ran around to different corners of the stage, snapping photos with the Melbourne Rod Laver Arena audience. This was an wonderfully endearing change from the traditional onstage photographer.
Wrapping up the first Melbourne concert, Silence Wang performed his debut track ‘Dreams Come True (慢慢懂)’, before taking a final bow and spray-painting “Melbourne Day 1” onto a black canvas, adding to his collection from his Macau and US stops.
Just when it seemed like the show was over, a video appeared of Silence arriving from a tram stop and walking toward Rod Laver Arena. As he got closer, he began to sprint, seamlessly transitioning to him running back on stage with ‘Asking You a Profound Question Humanity Has Long Dreamed Of (问你一个人类梦寐以求的深奥问题)’. Melbourne became the first city where this song was performed, and the entrance was utterly jaw-dropping, as he treated the Melbourne audience to another special moment, one last time.
Silence Wang built Romance City brick by brick with his monsters, whom I later learned were called ‘ROMANOVAs’, distinct characters created to exist within his universe. It wasn’t just a concert; it was a musical journey and teleportation into his world. Silence Wang showcased his mastery across various genres, including ballads, love songs, hip-hop, rock, R&B, EDM, and synth-pop. It was truly a treat to watch him perform in my city.
Silence Wang’s 2026 “Rise of Romance” World Tour was an absolute success, and I looked forward to his future projects and hope he’ll return to Australia again soon. From his music to the stage production, lighting, and connection with his fans, every aspect Silence Wang delivered at the highest level.
